Biographical Notes

Albany, Guildford, New Norcia, etc, WA

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 63-64:

Coll, Emilianus, OSB, Spanish, Golden Jubilarian
Pastor of Souls: But a Medico as well

This worthy gave 50 years of service to the incipient and troubled Church in W.A. He was born in Catalonia on 8 November 1831 and should be distinguished from Killian Coll, whose known biography follows and who likewise was a Catalonian. According to the pioneer of the Geraldton area, Fr. Adolphus Lecaille, Coll and himself arrived in W.A. on the same day in 1858. (Letter of Lecaille, Perth Archdiocesan Archives). Where the first three years were spent has not been ascertained but certainly he was in Albany from 1860 to 1864. Fr. Eugene Perez OSB, New Norcia historian, in a brochure issued for the Centenary of the Church in Albany, states: "In 1860 Fr. E. Coll O.S.B., a qualified physician, came as permanent priest. The Albany Catholics bought a house, and with their contributions and the help of the materials from the ruined building, fitted it up for a priest's dwelling and a place of worship. (Coll's letter to Colonial Secretary, 14.2.1861). £100 had been spent on the church which measured 37' by 27'. £25 was needed for completion and this was contributed by the Colonial Secretary out of Government funds. Coll remained in Albany for four years. He was long remembered by the settlers of King Sound for his frequent medical attention, when doctors were scarce in the colony". He was appointed Colonial Chaplain at Guildford in January 1865, and a furore commenced over his receiving a Government salary before taking up his appointment. (Perth Archives).
Seemingly Bishop Serra had obtained official civil authority for Fr. Coll to use his medical knowledge and qualifications both at Albany and Guildford. How long he was stationed at the latter place is unclear from the records, but all Directories from 1881 to 1908 link the 'medico' with the New Norcia Monastery. Directories also show that he had brief sojourns at Morda (1898)(1899), and at Marah (1907). Life's long span of 77 years was completed at New Norcia Monastery on 30 September 1908.
