Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born in [1863) in County Westmeath, Ireland. Details of education unknown. Studied at Killarney seminary. Date and place of ordination unknown but evidence given at the inquest into his death suggested he had been in the colony for about 13 years, and had been ordained 11 years, such that he may have been ordained in Australia, possibly Sydney. Details of travel to Australia unknown. He possibly was at Bourke 1888 to 1890. There is a report that Cardinal Moran sent '£100 to Rev Fr Lynch of Bourke as first instalment of diocesan collection in aid of the sufferers of the recent flood'. He then was appointed to Walgett for a short time (mid 1890) (Walgett was moved between the Bathurst and Armidale diocese at the time as boundaries were settled). He was transferred to Tamworth, but had been staying at Quirindi, serving Wallabadah as well, for two weeks at the time of his death. He was found floating in Quirindi Creek, drowned, on the morning of 21 May 1892. At an inquest held in Quirindi on 23 May 1892 an open verdict was handed down, with words that he was suffering brain illness at the time. He was buried at Quirindi. The headstone erected over his grave incorrectly gives the date of death as 1891. It was stated at the inquest that he had said he had a brother a priest in the Ballarat diocese (probably Michael Lynch, Horsham Vic). (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
