b. Watergrass Hill, Co. Cork 1816; nephew of famous Father Prout (Francis Mahony); ed. Maynooth, Irish Coll., Rome; Doctor of Divinity with Honours; Professor at Maynooth; arr. Melb. 1856; served at St. Francis' and St. Patrick's East Melb., where in 1859 sharp conflict arose with Bishop Goold over debts and expenditure. Account of law suit and bitterness would fill a large book. It's difficult to know who, if anyone, won the verdict. A very sad 'scandal' which rocked church and community. d. Tagout, Co. Wexford or at Cork; age 55.
