Biographical Notes

Fr Frank Cresp, Good and Faithful Servants: Recalling the Spirit of the Deceased Priests of the Diocese of Port Augusta and Port Pirie 1888-2008, 2008:
Smith (Smyth), Matthew (or Mathias or even Michael

This unusual character seems to have answered to any of these names. There seems no reason to believe that there was more than one individual. For instance, one of his contemporaries, Timothy McEvoy, refers to him as both Smith and Smyth in the space of a very short paragraph.
Studied at St Kieran's College, Kilkenny, Ireland.
Arrived here from Bally-James-Duff, Ireland, in 1915. Pekina 1915; Port Augusta 1916; Tarcoola 1916.
Army Chaplain during 1st World War. Enlisted at Tarcoola. His name was on the Honour Roll in the old Tarcoola Hall (maybe still is). Left the Diocese in 1920 and joined Diocese of Toledo, Ohio, USA.
His last Will and Testament, preserved in Peterborough is a classic piece of literature. We hope it wasn't his last.

(Reproduced with the approval of Sister Mary Cresp RSM)
