Biographical Notes

Chaplain and naturalist on board La Recherche, one of the ships in Bruny d'Entrecasteaux's expedition in search of La Perouse. The expedition visited Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in April 1792 and in January 1793.

Ventenat was subsequently detained in Surabaya, where, gravely ill, he was eventually released and permitted to go to Mauritius, where he died.

Date of death also recorded as 13 May 1795 by Rev. T. Southerwood, A Prayer-Calendar of Deceased Priests in Australia 1788-2009, p 60.
