Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Gough, Michael

Born Collinstown, Co Meath, Ireland. Date of birth unknown. Details of education unknown. Studied at All Hallows 1843 to 1847. Ordained at All Hallows for the diocese of Madras, India on 18 May 1847. Worked mostly as a military chaplain in India (Madras) for 17 years, then came to Australia and the Maitland diocese for his health after a short time back in Ireland. He was appointed to Tamworth in 1864, remaining there for some 10 years. In 1875 he retired and went to live in Sydney where he died on 20 July 1880, at his residence in Newtown. He bequeathed £100 to St Mary's Cathedral, a larger amount to St Vincent's hospital, and was a great benefactor of the Good Samaritan Convent Glebe, where his memory was revered by the Sisters. He was buried at Petersham.
