Mourning for a gentle priest, Catholic Leader, Brisbane, Christmas 2004, p 5:

Fr Ron Illidge, who was a priest of Brisbane archdiocese for 43 years, died on December 17.

Fr Illidge, 74, had been living at Holy Spirit Home, Carseldine since March.

He was Goodna parish priest for 10 years, from 1975-85, and then relieved firstly at Rochedale-Springwood parish and then Daisy Hill parish until he retired at the end of 1995.

Born at Woodford, northwest of Brisbane, on March 4, 1930, Fr Illidge was an electrician before entering the seminary at Banyo, where he studied for eight years leading up to his ordination in Brisbane on June 29, 1961.

Retired Brisbane priest Fr Basil Meaney was among his friends, having studied with him at Banyo and been ordained with him.

Fr Meaney said both he and Fr Illidge had left school at Junior level (Year 10), and they completed their senior secondary studies at Banyo.

Fr Meaney said Fr Illidge was “a very kind man, a very gentle person and very thoughtful of his parishioners”.

He would be remembered for those qualities and for his prayerfulness.

Fr Meaney said Fr Illidge was totally dedicated to the priesthood.

Fr Illidge had been an assistant priest at Moorooka, Gayndah, Gympie and Beaudesert, before being appointed parish priest of Goodna.

His funeral was held in St Stephen’s Cathedral last Wednesday.
