Frederick Brown, and his brother William, attended St Patrick's College, East Melbourne, as a student, after milking the family cows on their farm at Mordialloc, south of Melbourne. He entered the Society at Loyola College, Watsonia, 3 February 1936, and after a year's juniorate studies, began the study of philosophy in 1939. He completed another juniorate year in 1942, without taking a university degree, before regency at Xavier College, Burke Hall, 1943-45. Theology was studied at Canisius College, Pymble, 1946-49, and tertianship followed immediately afterwards at Sevenhill. Brown had a varied priestly ministry, teaching at St Ignatius College, Norwood, 1951-3 and 1960-61; St Louis School, Perth, 1954-59, where he was also minister; St Ignatius College, Riverview, 1964 and again 1973-75; Xavier College, Kostka Hall, as headmaster, 1965-70; and St Aloysius' College, Milson's Point, 1971-72. During these years he was usually minister, or at least involved with the material well being of the house, and taught mathematics. He enjoyed this work and did it well. He was efficient. At St Louis' he was involved with fund raising for the chapel and school oval. At Kostka, he was responsible for the new chapel, one that was well accommodated for the modern liturgy. He also did parish work at Lavender Bay, 1962-3. He spent some years, 1976-83, as assistant minister at Canisius College, Pymble, and chaplain to St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, 1984-88. For a year he was chaplain to Windsor Convent, and finally, assistant chaplain to the nuns at Abbotsford, 1991-97, living at Campion College, Kew. He developed heart trouble in latter years and cancer during his last year of life. Brown was a hard working, zealous priest, but somewhat restless, desiring change regularly. He was set in his ways, with very clear views on what were appropriate ideas and actions. He and his brother Bill were always experts on the latest news about the sickness of those connected with the Society. At his funeral Mass, his contemporary, Cecil Smith, recalled his qualities of kindness and friendliness, his unassuming work, his devotion to the spiritual life, and fidelity to the Church. His shyness prevented him from preaching, but many experienced his practical charity. (Reproduced by permission of Fr David Strong SJ.) |
