Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Mullins, William A

Born 29 June 1879, Tallangatta Vic. Educated at St Joseph's College, Hunter's Hill NSW from age 15, then studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Manly. He was ordained on 30 November 1904 in St Mary's Cathedral Sydney by Cardinal Moran with S Burchell for the diocese of Manila, Philippines. On arrival in the Philippines, which was then administered by the United States of America, he was appointed to the charge of the parish of Pasay, where he spent a year, before being forced to return to Australia, as a result of ill health and an inability to handle the difficult climate. He joined the Armidale diocese, and was appointed as assistant priest, Tamworth, where he remained for five years. His next appointment was as assistant priest, Moree (four years), following which he was transferred back to Tamworth in 1914 as Administrator of the parish. He remained in Tamworth until his death. A memorial window subsequently was installed in St Michael's church, Tallangatta in 1923, to commemorate his life. That window was transferred to the new church when the town subsequently was moved to accommodate increased water height in the Hume Dam. His funeral was attended by a large cross section of the Tamworth community, with the Municipal Council passing a condolence motion, as also other bodies within the area. The memorial over his grave records that it was 'erected by his bereaved friends in Tamworth and district'. He died suddenly of heart failure on the afternoon of Sunday 20 March 1922. He was buried in the Tamworth cemetery.
