Father George Williams, M.S.C., at the Sacred Heart Monastery, Kensington. The celebrant, Very Rev. Father J. M. Kerrins, M.S.O. (Provincial of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart), was assisted by Rev. Dr. P. McCabe, M.S.C., and Rev. Father F. Brady, M.S.C., as deacon and sub-deacon, respectively. Right Rev. Monsignor T. Hayden, D.D., P.P., presided at the Office. Among the visiting clergy present were: Rev. Fathers E. McAuliffe, P.P., O.B.E., J. Halpin, P.P., P. Walsh, P.P., F. Green, P.P., Aloysius, C.P., Bonaventure, C.P., J. Fitzpatrick, F. McGinley, T. J. Pierse, B.A.; also the brothers of the deceased, Richard, Thomas and Joseph Williams. Mrs. B. Williams, of Glen Innes (mother) and Rev. Mother M. Kevin (sister), of the Ursuline Convent, Toowoomba, were unable to be present. The students' choir, under the direction of Rev. Father W. Dirou, M.S.C., gave full expression to the Gregorian plain-song. Brun's "Bone Pastor" and Roulier's "Jesu Salvator Mundi" were rendered as additional motets. After Holy Mass, the remains of Father Williams were interred at the Randwick Cemetery in the presence of his relatives and fellow-religious. Father Williams was born on October 22, 1895, at Ben Lomond, in the Armidale Diocese. He received his early education from the Sisters of St. Joseph at Glen Innes, and entered the Apostolic School at Douglas Park in 1914. After completing his theological studies at the Sacred Heart Monastery, Kensington, he was ordained to the priesthood at St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, in 1926. From his earliest years at Douglas Park, Father Williams won the admiration of his fellow-students by his intellectual qualities, and their love by his solid virtue and his bright and amiable disposition. His deep piety, his keen wit and unusual literary ability promised great things, but unfortunately, for several years his priestly apostolate was overshadowed by sickness. After a long illness, he was called to his eternal reward at the age of 41 years on Monday, 12th inst.—R.I.P. |
