Costello, Patrick, Irish
A Wild Kerryman
Not to be confused with Peter Aloysius Costello of the Goulburn Diocese ..... Patrick and Michael's parents were Timothy and Ellen (Pierce). At the time of Patrick's birth in March 1865 they had moved to Loughell (?) [Loughill], County Limerick. Educated at Mount Melleray and at All Hallows, he was ordained in Killarney Cathedral by Bishop Coffey on 22 June 1890. Choosing to serve in the Ballarat Diocese, under Bishop Moore and following in his brother's footsteps he arrived on board the 'Oruya' on 26 October 1890. Apparently he was his brother's helpmate for a few years, and in the hot, dusty climate of the Mallee was led into the same propensity in assuaging the thirst. Swift episcopal moves were of no avail. He was sent to Casterton in 1891-2, Horsham for a few years, then Warrnambool, Watchem, Dungaree 1897-8. He then rambled interstate. He was at Wilcannia in 1915. He died in Brisbane in 1931.

ANZCC research:
1) It was actually Fr Peter A. Costello who was named in the 1915 Australian Catholic Directory as being stationed at Wilcannia.
2) Two persons by the name of Patrick Costello died in Queensland 1925-1935, and only one whose parents were listed as Timothy Costello and Ellen nee Pierce: Patrick John Costello, buried at Ipswich, used the name John Costello when marrying Ellen Butler in Queensland on 27 November 1902. Ellen died in 1930, aged 72.
