Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 121:

Dahdah, Joseph, Rt. Rev., Lebanese
A Mighty Cedar Of Lebanon

Flowing Eastern robes and a long dark bushy beard were somewhat of a novelty when worn by a visitor to Manly College and to ceremonies in St. Mary's Cathedral in the 1930s. The writer, then a student, wasn't quite sure whether or not he shared the same Faith as the bearded Joseph Dahdah, the visitor in question. Joseph was then in his eighties and had come from Mount Lebanon in 1893 to serve the people of the Maronite rite, making Redfern his residence. The Maronite church there seems to have been a resting-place for the zealous Joseph, for he was away often on visits to his people in New Zealand, Melbourne, Brisbane and perhaps in other parts of Australia as well. Critical seminarians regarded his robes as being as frowsy as his beard. But behind the outward they perceived a man of stately bearing and a man of prayer. The Melbourne 'Advocate' and New Zealand 'Tablet' carried fulsome praise of his sermons, ceremonies, and faithful attention to his people whenever he paid his occasional visits. And I presume the followers of this Eastern Rite in Sydney itself would be better able to sing the praises of the venerable than the writer himself. He had at least one break from long service in 1924 when he went home to the land of the cedars. In 1935 he left Redfern forever and died in Lebanon in 1942. He had attained a Golden Jubilee (at least) and a ripe old age of 93.
