Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev Jeffrey John (Jeff) Scully, died 24 June 2015

Jeffrey John Scully was born in Toowoomba on 24th November 1941 in Toowoomba to John Trevor Scully and Irene Singleton. He has one sister Sandra Maree Neale and one nephew Jeff, and three nieces Suzie, Maria and Leanne. His primary School education took place at St Patrick's School and his secondary education at St Mary's Christian Brothers College Toowoomba. In 1960 Jeffrey went to Kelvin Grove Teachers Training College where he graduated with a certificate in teaching. He taught at Quinalow State School before entering Banyo Seminary in 1963. He studied Philosophy from 1963-1965 at Banyo. In 1965 he went to study at Propaganda Fide in Rome and gained his Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1969. It was at Propaganda College that he met his life long friend Fr Frank O'Loughlin from Melbourne. He was ordained to the priesthood in St Patrick's Cathedral on 12th August 1969 by Bishop William Brennan. His first priestly appointment was to St Patrick's Cathedral followed by Goondiwindi, Dalby, Tully, St Thomas More's, Toowoomba and St Finbarr's Quilpie where he remained from 1980 until May 2007.
Jeffrey had a thirst for knowledge and gained a Bachelor of Arts from QLD University in 1988.
In 1991 he obtained a Diploma of Social Justice Studies from the Yarra Theological Union in Melbourne. His Diocesan appointments included Co-ordinator of Clergy life and Ministry in the Diocese; College of Consultors; Diocesan Council of Priests; Diocesan Personnel Board.
Fr Frank O'Loughlin delivered the Eulogy and spoke of Jeffrey's lovely combination of deep human qualities and his real, deeply rooted faith. There was no pretence to that faith; it was lived both happily and critically. He was profoundly human. He so enjoyed his family, loved them and rejoiced in their lives and talents and felt their troubles. Jeffrey believed whole-heartedly in Jesus Christ and lived out his deeply ingrained faith in the God who gives us to each other. His Banyo seminary class mate Bishop William Morris delivered the homily. He spoke of the words of Pope Francis who said he wanted to see in his brother Bishops and Priests, true pastors, not shepherds of power, but shepherds of service, not shepherds of ambition, but shepherds of love who would become part of the life of the communities in which they lived and served. Bishop Morris said these words for him, who worked and journeyed with Jeff over many years are a description of him as friend and pastor. Jeffrey died suddenly and peacefully at Lourdes home on 24th June 2015. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on 29th June 2015 in St Patrick's Cathedral. He is buried at the Toowoomba Garden of Remembrance.
