Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, pp 126-127:
James Murphy

James Murphy's ordination was the first in St Stephen's Cathedral in 34 years. He was the youngest of ten children from Swan Creek, Warwick, the youngest of the four brother priests.

Jim went through Nudgee College and St Patrick's at Manly. James, his brother Kevin and James Kelly were ordained by Archbishop Duhig at St Stephen's on 8th December 1913.

The Catholic Advocate states that 'this was the first ordination in the Cathedral since Joseph Canali in 1879' . Which of course also implies that Archbishop Robert Dunne never seems to have ordained anyone in his whole episcopacy.

In his 68 year of priesthood, Fr J Murphy served at Ipswich as a curate, then as Parish Priest at Helidon, Charleville, Cunnamulla, Childers, North Ipswich, Buranda and Corinda. From 1947 to 1968 he was Chaplain at Nudgee College.

He retired to the Lourdes Home in Toowoomba where he survived another 14 years. He died aged 94 year on 11th April 1982. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Patrick's Cathedral and the funeral took place in Toowoomba.

Note: Of historical interest is the reference to the first ordinations in Brisbane, all by Bishop Quinn. These were: Michael Devitt in 1863 in old St Stephen's, Michael Murray and Thomas O'Brien in 1873 in old St Stephen's, and Martin Mulhall, the first ordination in the present Cathedral in 1877.

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev James Murphy, died 4 [sic] Apr 1982

James Murphy was born in 1888, the son of Timothy and Bridget Murphy, who lived at Swan Creek, in the Warwick district. There were ten children in the family. Three of his brothers (Kevin, Michael Garrett and Patrick John), became Priests, and two sisters became nuns. Furthermore, a nephew became a Priest and three nieces, nuns. He was educated at the local State School and at Nudgee College, and then embarked upon seminary studies, first at St Columba's, Springwood, and then at St Patrick's College, Manly. On their completion he was ordained in St Stephen's Cathedral, by Archbishop Duhig, on 8th December, 1913, together with brother Kevin Murphy and James Kelly. As a Priest of the Brisbane Archdiocese, he served in the following places: Assistant Priest, Ipswich (1914-?); Gatton/Helidon (?); Parish Priest, Charleville/Cunnamulla (c1920); Childers (there in 1926); North Ipswich (1933-37); Buranda (?-1942); Corinda (where he succeeded his brother Patrick, 1942-45); Chaplain Nudgee College (1946-64). Ill health occasioned his retirement to Lourdes Home, Toowoomba, in 1964. He died there in 1982 and was buried in the Toowoomba Lawn Cemetery.
