And Father Boyle was pleased to express these sentiments on bidding the congregation good bye on Sunday evening, when he preached a soul-stirring sermon from the text, "He that persevereth to the end shall attain eternal glory."—At the morning service his Lordship the Bishop administered the rite of confirmation to 120 male and female communicants, some of the number being well advanced in years. At the conclusion of the ceremony the bishop delivered an appropriate address, pregnant of good to those who had just been confirmed and instructive to the congregation generally. The services were attended on Sunday by an unusually large number of worshippers. We understand the young body of communicants were all religiously instructed by the good Sisters of St. Joseph's Convent. --- Rev. Father Hegarty, C.M., The Catholic Press, Sydney, 18 November 1899, p 16, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article104664279: Considerable regret has been expressed in Ashfield since the news of Rev. Father Hegarty's forthcoming departure was circulated. Father Hegarty has been recalled to Melbourne, the scene of his first missionary labours. The zeal, cheerfulness and amiable qualities of the rev. gentleman have endeared him to the people of Ashfield, and his departure towards the end of next week will be lamented by the parishioners. Father Hegarty has been at St. Vincent's for the last five years, during most of which time he has been in charge of the combined parishes of Ashfield and Canterbury. --- Rev. Father Hegarty, National Advocate, Bathurst, 27 June 1904, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article157212139: The Rev. Father Hegarty, C.M., of Victoria, who is now in Bathurst, conducting a Retreat at the Convent of Mercy, preached at S.S. Michael and John's Cathedral last night. --- Obituary, The Argus, Melbourne, 30 December 1935, p 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11868887: The Vincentian fathers, St. Joseph's, Malvern, received at the week-end advice of the death in Ireland of the Rev. Father Hegarty. Father Hegarty came to Australia in 1893. Of his 21 years in Australia he spent the greater part attached to the staff at St. Joseph's, Malvern. He was parish priest from 1908 to 1914. During that period he superintended the building of St. Joseph's Church. He built the boys' school, and introduced the teaching order of the De La Salle Brothers to Victoria by placing them in charge. Recalled to Ireland in 1914, he served as chaplain during the war with the British troops, and for his services received the D.S.O. Since the war he had been engaged on missionary work in Ireland. A requiem mass will be celebrated for him at St. Joseph's, Malvern, on Thursday, at 10 a.m. --- T.W.
