Biographical Notes

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017, post-publication supplement:
King, Kevin

Teacher, chaplain; born 14 October 1928, East Melbourne, Victoria; died Melbourne, 28 March 2017, aged 88.

Kevin Thomas King was the only child of Percy and Brigid and was educated first by the FCJ nuns at Deepdene, and then by the Jesuits at St Patrick's College, East Melbourne. He entered the Jesuits at Loyola College, Watsonia, 1 February 1947, and after the Juniorate, 1948-49, at Loyola, studying Latin, English and History, he proceeded to philosophy studies at the same college, 1951-53. Regency was at Xavier College, Burke Hall, 1954-56, where he taught religion and mathematics. Theology followed at Canisius College, Pymble, 1957-60, and tertianship at Sevenhill, with Father Henry Johnston, 1961. He took the vows of a spiritual coadjutor, 15 August 1962.

King's first apostolic appointment was to St Aloysius' College, Milson's Point, 1962-70, where he was chaplain, and taught religion and French in the middle school and was director of various sodalities.

He was then appointed assistant mission promotor in Melbourne, 1971-75, and was also chaplain to the Old Patricians. He ran the Melbourne Mission Office and oversaw the work of volunteers, providing support for the committee that organised the Maytime Fair at Xavier College. He worked hard at rousing school children's interest in the Mission, while also increasing the circulation of the monthly news magazine. He was also on hand to assist in the management of the Opportunity Shops, especially the Blue Door in Richmond. King made a one visit to India, visiting all the Jesuits and their works during the hottest time of the year. This was an experience he never forgot.

Riverview was his next appointment, 1976-81, teaching religion, English, Latin and mathematics to the junior students.

When the position of chaplain to John XXIII College, Perth, became vacant in 1982, King was appointed chaplain until 2006. Here he was appreciated for the regularity of his presence. As his health began to decline with dementia, he retired to Arrupe House, Pymble, in 2007, and remained there until his final month, when he moved to Nazareth House, Camberwell, Melbourne.

King was a kind, courteous, meticulous man, a Jesuit faithful to the regular community life and religious duties.
