Chevreuil, Jean Baptiste, Very Rev., SM, French, Golden Jubilarian
Some Reader May Remember This Marist
In the Marist Necrology drawn up by Father John Hosie S.M., the death date of Jean Baptiste is given as 29 December 1943. No doubt this is correct and leads to the supposition that he must have died in France or somewhere overseas. As well the name does not appear after 1926 when J.B. was part of the community at Villa Maria, Hunters Hill. Other details as given by Father Hosie are: born in the Diocese of Nantes 2 February 1865; professed on 24 September 1887. He arrived in Sydney in 1891 spending a short time at Villa Maria before taking up a missionary task on Fiji. A good part of his life was taken up in service on Futuna and Rotuma Islands, possibly until about 1912. We find him at St. Patrick's, Church Hill later (1915 & 1917 Directories) and later still at Villa Maria (1920), (1926) - last reading in a Directory. At the time of death, wherever it was, he was 78 years of age and had attained the distinction of being a Golden Jubilarian.

Fifth Provincial of Oceania Province
He was born in Loire-Atlantique, France in 1865. After formation in France, England and Spain, he left for Oceania in 1890, aged 25. For the first 3 years he worked in the Procure at Sydney, before going on to Rotuma for 4 years. He was then recalled to work again in the Sydney Procure. In 1918, he became Provincial of Oceania in the difficult post-war period, the time of the great flu epidemic. After his term as Provincial he went to New Caledonia. After a year at Easo on Lifou, he was called to St. Louis and made Pro-Vicar and Superior of the Mission. In 1926 he took charge of the parish of La Conception, where he died aged 78.
