Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born at Ballinguilla, near Crookstown, parish of Kilmurry, Co Cork on 5 December 1849 he was educated at Bandon National School and Mount Melleray. He entered All Hallows seminary Dublin in 1868 and was ordained on 24 June 1874, having been one of two volunteers for the Armidale diocese, his friend Patrick Joseph O'Connor the other. He sailed for Australia in September 1874 but was shipwrecked in the Bay of Biscay on 30 September and was forced to return to England to seek another passage. He departed Gravesend on 17 November 1874, finally arriving in Armidale on 9 April 1875. Based in Armidale he travelled extensively to the coastal and inland regions of the diocese, plus Brisbane until, in June 1878 he was appointed by Archbishop Vaughan of Sydney, then responsible for the Diocese, to the Richmond district of the diocese. He established himself at Lismore. He was appointed Dean of the coastal part of the diocese in 1882 by Bishop Elzear Torreggiani, and undertook representational work for Torreggiani, including being in Grafton at the time of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in 1884. With Torreggiani he attended the Plenary Council held in Sydney in 1885, at the time contemplating returning to Ireland to accept the position of Rector of All Hallows College, Dublin. In the event a decision at the Plenary Council was made to recommend the division of the Armidale diocese and it appears it was suggested to him that he remain in Australia. When the new Grafton diocese (later Lismore) was created in mid 1887, from the coastal portion of the original Armidale diocese, he was appointed as the first bishop. He was consecrated in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney on 28 August 1887 by Cardinal Patrick Moran, assisted by Bishops Torreggiani and James Murray of Maitland. He died in Lismore on 4 June 1909, and was buried in the Lady Chapel of St Carthage Cathedral, Lismore. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
