To the Rescue of a Dying Bishop from Slayers
Father Stephen was born in the Lyons Diocese on 6 June 1819 and professed as a Marist on 25 September 1843. He came in Bishop Epalle's party to Sydney in 1845. Epalle who had been giving service as a priest in New Zealand in the period 1839-42 was appointed Vicar Apostolic of the Southern Solomon Islands and consecrated in Rome in 1845 (Other records give 21 July 1844). Old Directories state that on landing on Yzabel Island he "was murdered by natives". Chaurain had gone to his bishop's rescue and seemingly dragged him away from the attackers, but the martyr to the Faith succumbed later on 19 December 1845. Strange, that this martyrdom is not recognised as in the case of Saint Peter Chanel! From 1846 to 1850 Father Stephen was stationed at Villa Maria, Hunters Hill. He then transferred to London and taught at the Marist school of St. Anne's, Spitfield. In his Appendix to 'The Marist Fathers in Australia' (M.A. Thesis, Sydney, 1971) Father John Hosie S.M. gives the death date of the "rescuer as June 1867. The age was 67, and the place of death: London.

Fr. Stéphane Chaurain, d. 1887
Solomon Islands
He was born in Loire, France in 1819. He was professed in 1843 and left France in 1845 with Bishop Epalle and the first group of Marists to go to the Solomon Islands. When his group was attacked on Santa Isabel, he courageously ran back to rescue Bishop Epalle who was being clubbed down. The Bishop however died a few days later. After a few years in the Procure in Sydney, he took part in the foundation of St. Anne's in London in 1851, and then in 1864, in the foundation of Jefferson College in Louisiana, United States. After 3 years there he returned to work in London, where he died aged 68.
