Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Stephenson, Thomas Christopher

In various locations the surname is spelt 'Stevenson'. Born (1884), Kilmeadon, Co Waterford, Ireland, he was educated at Mount Melleray, then Mungret College, Limerick. He then studied at St John's College, Waterford, followed by St Sulpice, Paris, where he was ordained Deacon. He then attended the Irish College, Rome. He was ordained in Rome in June 1908. He was fluent in French and Italian. He came to the Armidale diocese after ordination, his initial appointment to Armidale for 6 years. He was then placed at Gunnedah as assistant priest, followed by periods in Tamworth, Mungindi, Bingara, Barraba and Inverell. He was on leave overseas in Ireland for two years (1924-1925), during which time he tried life with the Cistercian Order. He then returned to the diocese and Bundarra, June 1926 to January 1927. Further appointments to Armidale, Tamworth, Gunnedah and Inverell followed. He spent some time as chaplain at De La Salle College, Armidale. He died on 3 November 1936 in the Mater Misericordiae hospital, North Sydney, following a prolonged illness. He was buried in Armidale cemetery. A cousin, P Stephenson SJ, was based in Melbourne.
