Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Lyons, Peter

Born on 20 February 1937 at Bungonia, near Goulburn NSW he was educated at Bungonia public school, then Chevalier College Bowral. After leaving school he worked for some years as a nurse with the St John of God community in Sydney. He originally commenced his seminary studies at St Columba's College Springwood for the Archdiocese of Canberra-Goulburn, but withdrew after struggling with the course work such that he had to repeat a year. He returned to his nursing profession. In 1968 he resumed his studies at St Paul's National Seminary, Kensington, and was ordained for the Armidale diocese on 16 August 1972 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart church, Randwick by Bishop Henry Kennedy. His first appointment was as assistant priest, Tamworth. In May 1978 he was transferred to Gunnedah as assistant priest where he worked until he retired in 1989 because of illness. He continued to live in retirement in Gunnedah. His obituary in Gunnedah's Namoi Valley Independent newspaper commented on his life: 'He didn't stand on ceremony (was there ever a more unceremonious person?) and he easily saw through conceit and deception. But to those who needed help or understanding, he was a caring and compassionate friend, an emotional rock in a crisis, and for this, as much as anything else, he will be remembered by a very large number of people .... If there was one outstanding feature of his priestly life it was his great depth of compassion for people with serious or terminal illness and for those who had lost a family member or friend.' He died on 14 August 1991 in the Tamworth Base Hospital, and was buried at Gunnedah.
