Eight more Australian Jesuits will leave soon to join 15 Australian confreres already working on their newly-established mission in India.

The eight Jesuits—one priest and seven scholastics—will sail from Melbourne on the Mooltan on December 6.

The group will be the third contingent of Australian Jesuits to sail for the Indian mission in less than two years.

The first—a group of six—left Australia about Christmas, 1950, and the second band of nine sailed for India last Christmas.

The eight Jesuits chosen to leave on December 6 this year are the Rev. Father Michael Brady, S.J., and the Revs. Peter Coleman, S.J., Philip Crotty, S.J., Hans Hendricks, S.J., Brian O'Connell, S.J., Gavin O'Sullivan, S.J. Oswald Summerton, S.J., and James Thwaites, S.J.

The Revs. James Thwaites and Gavin O'Sullivan will begin their studies in Theology on arrival in India.

After preliminary studies in the Hindi language, the Revs. Oswald Summerton and Brian O'Connell are to do their teaching in the mission college.

The last three, the Revs. Peter Coleman, Philip Crotty and Hans Hendricks will first complete their studies in the Hindi language and then begin their course in philosophy.[...]

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017, post-publication supplement:
O'Sullivan, Gavin (HAZ)

Missionary, pastor, educator, formator, administrator, librarian; born Adelaide, South Australia, 2 March 1923; died Sitagarah, Hazaribag, India, 29 August 2019, aged 96.

Gavin Patrick O'Sullivan enlisted in World War II aged 18 years in the Australian army and worked as a dispatch rider in Northern Australia. It was during this time that he discerned God's call for him, and decided to enter the Jesuits, 15 June 1943, at Loyola College, Watsonia. Completing his juniorate and philosophy studies in 1949, O'Sullivan was assigned at Xavier College, Burke Hall, Kew, for regency, 1950-1952.

He was missioned to the Australian Hazaribag Mission in India, late 1952. Upon arrival, he continued his formation in theology at St Mary's College, Kurseong, 1953-56, and was ordained, 21 November 1955, at Kurseong by Archbishop Perrier. Hindi studies at Ranchi followed in 1957, with tertianship at Sitagarha, 1958. His first apostolic appointment was as parish priest of Maheshmunda, a rural parish with a flourishing Santhal mission. He fulfilled his role with enthusiasm and vigour. The next appointment was parish priest at Chandwa in 1963. This town was the centre for Catholic Aid, with distributions of relief and development goods. Assistant priest in Mahuadanr followed in 1967. This was a far-flung parish which currently has nine parishes. O'Sullivan enjoyed journeying on motor bike to distant villages to distribute the Sacraments.

For the year 1971, he taught the novices English, and, in 1972, was sent to the National Biblical Catechetical and Liturgical Centre, Bangalore, for a catechetical course. This was so successful, he went to Lyon, France, for audio visual training. Well trained, he returned afterwards to Bangalore as part of the staff. O'Sullivan always retained an interest in media and communications after this experience.

In 1977, O'Sullivan was appointed to St Xavier School, Bokaro, as manager, and later also as vice principal. He held this position for six years and was well respected by staff and students. Subsequent positions were treasurer of two houses, and as province librarian at St Xavier's since 1999.

His colleagues In India experienced O'Sullivan as a deeply spiritual man and pastorally zealous. He was much appreciated by religious for retreats and days of recollection. He was a good friend and companion, lived a simple life, a good community man, very punctual for community activities. He was not a person to seek the limelight.

It was also reflected that the most characteristic aspect of his Jesuit life was his availability to serve in whatever capacity to which he was assigned. He had a warm-hearted personality, welcoming and hospitable.

In April 2018, O'Sullivan was transferred to St Stanislaus College, Sitagarha as his health declined and he required nursing care.
