Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
O'Connor, John

Born in Fethard, Co Tipperary, about 1835, exact date unknown. Details of education unknown. Studied at Thurles from 1851 to 1854, then at Maynooth from 1854 to 1859. Ordained 1859, exact date and place of ordination unknown. The records indicate that he travelled through the United States of America collecting funds for the Cashel cathedral project. He then returned to Ireland in 1868 and resumed parish duties. He next obtained permission to leave the diocese in 1871, and appeared in New Zealand, at Dunedin in 1873, Cromwell 1873, and Bluff in November 1873. It seems he then came across to Australia, and worked in the Armidale diocese from 1874. Details of what he did and where he was located are unclear. He was located in the coastal portion of the diocese at Lismore in 1880, possibly at Casino in 1881. An entry in his diary by Coastal Dean J J Doyle dated 26 January 1882 records that O'Connor appears to have left abruptly around that date, and simply disappeared. No further information is known. Date and place of death unknown. Place of burial unknown.
