Biographical Notes

Hiscox, David Henry

Born 5 October 1893 at Puddledock, outside of Armidale, and educated at the local Donald and Tilbuster schools. He was the third son and fifth child of William and Hanna Hiscox. William Hiscox was the first president of Dumaresq Shire when it was formed. His paternal grandfather, John Hiscox, had been an original pioneer settler of the property Prosper in the 1850s. He attended De La Salle College, Armidale, entered St Columba's College Springwood in 1917, then went to St Patrick's College, Manly from 1920. He was ordained on 3 December 1924 in Armidale by Bishop P J O'Connor. He served in the parishes of Tamworth, Wee Waa, Moree, Bundarra, Walgett, Walcha and Guyra before taking up his last position as parish priest, Tenterfield. He was made a Domestic Prelate (Monsignor) in March 1963. A keen sportsman he enjoyed clay pigeon shooting, played bowls and was a keen amateur photographer. He retired as parish priest of Tenterfield and moved back to Armidale to live at the beginning of 1971. He died on 26 April 1971, and is buried in the Armidale cemetery.
