Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979, p 23:

Beechinor, Daniel Xavier Rt. Rev., Irish
A Stone Outside Dan Murphy's Door

The title comes about because he and his brother, Michael, were nephews of the reigning Bishop, Daniel Murphy. Nepotism and harshness surround the names thereof. D.X. was born in Co. Cork, 1836; ed. Carlow and Propaganda; ord. in St. John Lateran's 1863; served in Dublin; arr. Hobart 1866. Movements are: Richmond 1866-8; Adm. Hobart Cathedral 1868-80; P.P. in Launceston 1880-1923. He was a bundle of energy, making an appeal for funds to re-build the Cathedral. Murphy wanted him as his coadjutor, but Tasmanian priests blocked the appointment. He figures in several histories, among them: Cardinal Moran's History of the Catholic Church in Australasia; Planting a Faith (series) by Rev. W.T. Southerwood; Christian Brothers in Australia 1869-1919.
Other ref.:- Advocate 24.5.1923; M.D.H.C. File (Torquay), with correspondence from late Mgr. J. Cullen (Hobart Archivist). D. 16.5.1923; age 87 (two weeks short of a Diamond Jubilee); interred in Launceston.
