Biographical Notes

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017, post-publication supplement:
Meagher, Geoffrey (HAZ)

Missionary, teacher, administrator; born Cootamundra, NSW, 30 June 1942; died India, 5 March 2020, aged 77.

Geoffrey Meagher spent his secondary education at St Ignatius College, Riverview, following his older brothers. He entered the Society at Loyola College, Watsonia, 1 February 1961, and followed the course in philosophy after taking vows: a time of five years.

Then being sent to India, Meagher spent six years teaching at St Xavier's, as well as teaching Juniors at St Stanislaus College, Sitagarha. He loved teaching and spent 25 years teaching these Juniors. He was also at various times director of pre-novices, and after tertianship in South India and post graduate studies at Scranton, USA, was also rector for six years until June 1991.

Also, during these years he was the province coordinator of formation and vocations promotor. He directed an annual vocations camp for students just finishing secondary education.

For 14 years, from 1991, he taught at St Xavier's, Bokaro Steel City, including eight years as principal from April 1997, where he is remembered as friendly and courteous, a genial presence in the educational circles of the town. Largely under Meagher's leadership, the schools within the city participated in various ways in the City's festivals and community events. The social service league at St Xavier's helped raise funds for projects such as the 'Charity' brothers TB and Leprosy Colonies, as well as supporting less-advantaged children in other schools.

As formation coordinator he travelled around India each year to meet his students at various stages of formation. He was tireless, and enthusiastic in fulfilling this task.

Meagher always presented as robust, so his health disabilities during his last years came as a surprise. He was a simple, uncomplicated man, radiating and unaffected, with appealing youthfulness. This made for easy relationships with young men. He was a loved Jesuit, everyone recognising his skills as a guru.
