Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born in Danesfort, Co Kilkenny, Ireland in [1869] he was educated at St Kieran's College, Kilkenny, and studied for the priesthood at St Kieran's College. He was ordained in 1894 by Dr Brownrigg, Bishop of Ossory for the Maitland diocese and commenced as assistant priest Murrurundi after arriving in the diocese in October 1894. In 1898 he transferred to Merewether, where he worked for two years. Because of ill health he then was appointed to Emmaville, where he worked for two years, until the increasing effects of consumption forced him to resign from that position. He was replaced at Emmaville by Casper Smiers. He then moved around the Australian States for some time, particularly Queensland, in an effort to recover his health, without success. He died at Singleton on 31 May 1907, and was buried at Singleton. A cousin was a Fr P Meagher of the Maitland diocese. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
