Callinan, Bartholomew, Irish
Struggling with a Health Problem

This youth, who was afflicted with T.B., was born in Imagh, Diocese of Killaloe, County Clare, in July 1852. His parents were Bartholomew and Mary Barry. (All Hallows Records of priests). He studied at the Vincentian College at Castleknock from 1895 to 1880 [sic]. A few months were spent at All Hallows where he was ordained on 24 June '80. He arrived in Melbourne on the 'Cotopaxi' in Nov.'80 and made his way over to Launceston. Scarcely a year was spent in the Tasmanian climate when he found it necessary to seek a warmer climate. He came to Bathurst Diocese, spending a short time at the Cathedral there, and at Mudgee. Returning to Launceston again the health deteriorated. Hence the 1886 Directory records: absent on sick leave. He died of the dread complaint of those years on 9 April 1887 and is buried in Launceston. Age: 34.
