Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979, p 36: Buckeridge, George, SJ, D.D., D.Ph., Irish --- Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017: Scholar, pastor; born Wexford, Ireland, 19 January 1842; died Adelaide, 30 October 1904, aged 62. George Buckeridge studied for the priesthood at Propaganda, Rome, and obtained a doctorate in philosophy, 1862, and a doctorate in theology, 1866. On his return to Ireland, Cardinal Cullen appointed him a professor at Clonliffe College, where he taught for 11 years. After repeated requests for release from duties in order to join the Society, Cullen granted his request in 1878, and so Dr Buckeridge joined the Society at Milltown Park, Dublin, 15 July 1878. From 1880-86 he gave retreats and performed pastoral work from Milltown Park, except for a year teaching rudiments, French and Italian at Clongowes College. He arrived in Australia in 1886 and was appointed, first, to St Patrick's College, where he was prefect of studies and was involved in pastoral work, and then, to Xavier College, 1889-91, as spiritual father and assistant prefect of studies. In 1891 he was appointed superior and parish priest at Hawthorn, Victoria, until 1894 when he went to North Sydney as minister. During 1896 he undertook missions in the Adelaide parishes of Norwood and Hectorville, and then volunteered to work in the Indian Jesuit mission at Changanacherry, Travancore. When he arrived he discovered that an Indian bishop had been appointed, and the general ordered his return to Australia. He also served in the parishes of Richmond, 1897-98, Hawthorn, 1898-01, where he was also superior and parish priest, and Norwood, 1902-4. He was one of the few Jesuits in Australia to be nominated for a bishopric in Australia. However, another candidate was chosen. (Reproduced by permission of Fr David Strong SJ.) |
