Justin Michael King was born in Warwick on 25th January, 1935, to James Michael and Margaret Veronica King (nee Hogan). He attended the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers at Warwick. His Seminary training was at Pius XII, Banyo, and he was ordained in Warwick on 30th June, 1959, by Bishop William Brennan. His first appointment was to Dalby in 1960, followed by Quilpie (1962-67), Taroom, Aitape (1967-68), Chinchilla (1969-72), Crow's Nest, Jandowae (as PP, 1974-82), Roma (as PP, 1982-89) and Pittsworth (as PP, 1989-92). He also volunteered for missionary work in the Papua New Guinea Diocese of Aitape where he contracted a severe illness. Fr Justin believed that his greatest gift was his preisthood. He also believed that every parishioner had something to offer and he encouraged all to contribute to parish life in whatever way they could. His smiling face and welcome word endeared him as a loyal friend, and a generous, affectionate and sensitive man who didn't take people for granted. He died in 1992, aged 57, after a battle with cancer, and is buried in the Toowoomba Lawn Cemetery. At the time of his death he was survived by his 93 year old father, his brother Pat and his sisters Mary, Mercy Sister - Sr Mary of the Mater Hospital and Camillus King of Brisbane. He was a great authority on things Australian and Bush lore and was sometimes referred to as the 'pipe-smoking philosopher'. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
