John Daley, Undertaker, Latrobe and Spring streets, Melbourne. --- Victoria, Freeman's Journal, Sydney, 6 June 1863, p 5, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article115428403: The Catholic community at large will regret to learn from our columns the death of the Rev. Francis Hayden. This sad event took place on Tuesday, the 26th inst., at the presbytery, St. Kilda. Father Hayden was educated at Carlow, which college he left in deacon's orders in 1850, for the mission in British Guiana. On reaching Demerara he received the order of priesthood from the Right Rev. Dr. Hynes, and was stationed in George Town, where he zealously performed the duties of a missionary until the year 1857, when, in ill health, he returned to Europe with Bishop Hynes, and with him visited Rome. On returning from this city to England it was believed that his health would be benefited by a change of climate, he consequently withdrew, with his bishop's approval, from the South American Mission, and came to Australia in 1858. He was first stationed at St. Patrick's Cathedral, where he won, by his diligent discharge of his duties, the affection of the congregation and the esteem of many sincere friends. Father Hayden was next appointed to Ballaarat, where he laboured, until within the last month, with equal success. As his health was visibly on the decline, his Lordship, in the course of last month, thought it advisable to remove him to a mission where the labours should be lighter, and he was appointed to St. Kilda; but the change, however, produced no beneficial results, and he died within a month after his appointment. The new congregation will not have had time to appreciate his many merits, but older friends in the colony will long and deeply regret him. The reverend gentleman was attended in his last moments by Father Shinnick, of Emerald Hill, from whom he received the last rites of the Church. The funeral took place on Thursday, 29th inst. — Victorian, May 30. |
