Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 17:

Campion, James, Irish
Youth of Great Promise

Among the tombstones of several priests in the Tower Hill Cemetery in the well-known Catholic settlement of Koroit and Port Fairy we find that of James Campion, a very energetic and zealous youth who died on 13 June 1888 at the age of 28. He was born in Ballingarry, County Tipperary in 1860. Studies for the Priesthood were carried out at St. Patrick's College, Thurles, and at Maynooth where he was ordained late in 1882 for the Diocese of Cashel by Bishop Moran (later Cardinal), then Bishop of Ossory. A canonical dispensation was granted for the under age factor. He gave service at Colac and Ballarat, and in January 1886 when Koroit was made a mensal parish by Bishop James Moore, became the first Administrator. The building of a handsome two-storey Presbytery stands to his credit - all at the cost of £2000.
