Father O'Reilly of Tamworth goes to Bingara, [...] --- T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born on 9 June 1888 in Newcastle he was educated by the Sisters of Mercy and completed his education at Douglas Park. He studied at St Patrick's College Manly, and was ordained in St Mary's Cathedral Sydney on 30 November 1910 with JP Harrington by Cardinal Moran. His first appointments were as assistant priest Tamworth, Bingara, Wee Waa, Quirindi, Inverell and Moree. For many years (at least 1936-1954) he was Secretary and Treasurer of the Diocesan Education Board, not Inspector of the Diocesan Schools as recorded in some places. He was appointed as the first parish priest of Boggabri in March 1924, remaining there until 1938 when he transferred to Manilla. He was parish priest Manilla until 1944 when he was appointed to Moree, where he remained until his death. He was made a Domestic Prelate (Monsignor) in 1950. In 1962 he retired from active duty, but remaining as parish priest Moree. An Administrator was appointed. Bishop Edward Doody described him in his obituary as 'shy, but that was cloaked in a brusque manner that led people to believe he was harsh ... [He] was in indifferent health for many years and went regularly to Sydney for treatment ... [he] had an eye for public morals. [He] had a good knowledge of the law particularly local government law, and used that knowledge to help others'. He died in St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney on 3 August 1967, and was buried in Moree cemetery. The inscription on his headstone reads 'Parish Priest of Moree 1944-1967. Erected by Fr E Meehan and Mr B Waterford'. All of his brothers and sisters were in religious life. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
