Carreras, John, nationality unknown
He Believed in the Rod...
We'd hardly know of his presence in Perth were it not for Police Court records. He seemingly arrived in Perth in 1875 (Melb. Advocate 13.3.1875). He was Superintendent of an Orphanage conducted by church authorities at Subiaco. It was alleged that he allowed one of the boys, by name McGann, to be punished too severely. Accordingly an investigation was held before the Police Court and Carreras was charged. What the outcome was is not clear, but the Perth Record, 6 November 1876, records the following statement: "The Managers of the Orphanage in their letter to our contempories express how deeply pained they were at the excessive punishment inflicted upon McGann; but still, viewing the case even worst aspect, there was really nothing after all in it to justify the editorial vituperation of the newspaper 'Inquirer', or the falsehoods of its anonymous correspondent..." Perhaps the rod was discontinued from that time onwards, for the same issue of the Record states: "The good Sisters of Mercy have kindly consented to take over the future management of the Orphanage..." My informant (f.f. below) states that Fr. John Carreras had been appointed to the managerial post in 1873.
