Joachim Dardel, Missionary Father of the Cook Islands; aged 71 years. Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Benedict's, Monday, 11th, 9.30 a.m. Interment at the Catholic Cemetery, Panmure.—R.I.P. --- Rev. Father J. Dardel, New Zealand Herald, 9 August 1941, p 14, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19410809.2.114: The death occurred at the Mater Hospital last evening of the Rev. Father Joachim Dardel, aged 71. Born in France, his desire for the life of a missionary led him to join the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, or Picpus Fathers as they are commonly called, the same society of which Father Damien, the pioneer leper missionary of Molokai was a member. In 1894 the Catholic Cook Islands Mission was established by Rome and the Picpus Fathers at Tahiti were asked to take charge of it. Shortly after his ordination Father Dardel went to Rarotonga, and for the past 41 years had worked on that mission. A short time ago he came to Auckland for medical treatment. His condition was improving until last night, when he collapsed and died. Requiem Mass will precede the funeral, which is to take place on Monday from St. Benedict's to the Catholic cemetery, Panmure. |
