Biographical Notes

The Rev. John Crane (Sub-Prior O.S.A., New Ross), whose death is announced, belonged to a well-known County Wexford family that gave several distinguished members to the Church. Deceased was ordained in Rome in 1878, was attached to the mission at St. Monica's, London, appointed to the mission in Northern Queensland in 1885, and elected successively at the Chapters of 1889-1903 Prior of Grantstown and Callan.

Crane, John Peter Aloysius, Very Rev., OSA, Irish
From a Family of Many Priestly Vocations

One record states there were five priest brothers. Certainly he was a nephew of Bishop Martin Crane OSA and Fr. Nicholas Crane OMI. If there were five brothers, one was Fr. William Stanislaus Crane OSA. (APH: Archive Provinciae Hiberniae, Ballyboden, Dublin). The latter gives birthdate as 1855 in London; MDHC records claim Linden, Co. Wexford as the place of origin. Very likely the novitiate years were spent in Granstown, Co. Wexford, while priesthood studies were received at the Posterula, Rome, and other Italian houses. Early in his priesthood career he was made Sub-prior in the London house. (ACPH: Acta Capitulorum Prov. Hib.) From there he was appointed in 1885 to the Vicariate of North Queensland. Directories indicate a stationing at Cooktown (1886) and at Cairns (1888)(1892). In 1892 he returned to Ireland and was Prior in several houses. He died in New Ross, USA, on 4 October 1920 at the age of 65.
