He attended the local National School and Rockwell College, run by the Holy Ghost Fathers. He was ordained from St John's Seminary, Waterford, on 16th June, 1926 by Archbishop Hacket. His first appointment was to Warwick in 1927, followed by Toowoomba in 1929. He remained on the Cathedral staff until 1937 when he was appointed Parish Priest of Pittsworth. In 1940 he returned to Toowoomba to assume the duties of Cathedral Administrator, on the departure of Dr Madden to Manly Seminary. He also was given the title Dean during this period. In 1948 he went to the Parish of Allora (1948-50), followed by Stanthorpe (1951-57). For many years the production of the Toowoomba "Parish Notes" came under Dean O'Donnell's administration. Edmund never lost his Irish characteristics. He died on a trip to Ireland in 1957, from a heart attack. He is buried at Boher Lahan near his brother, Rev James O'Donnell, who served in the Brisbane Archdiocese. Both priests were nephews of Monsignor Lee (PP of Rosalie) and he is buried near them.
