Father J.G. Moran, who is returning to Ireland as soon as shipping accommodation becomes available, was accorded a farewell at St. Joseph's School Hall, West Tamworth, by members of Tamworth Catholic community, which he has served for the past two years as assistant priest. Despite unfavorable weather the hall was packed. Father Moran was presented with a wallet of notes. Among visiting priests who attended were the Rev. Dr. P.J. Dunne, the Rev. Fathers S. O'Brien, R. Watson and J. Conroy; also the Rev. Brothers L.R. Bloom and Ryan. The Mayor (Alderman J. W. Collins) and Mrs. Collins attended. Musical numbers, compered by Mrs. W.A. Grayston, who assisted Mrs. Mary Jones in the arrangement of the programme, were presented. Speeches were made by the Mayor, the Rev. Dr. Dunne, the Rev. Father Carroll, Messrs. E. Flood, S. Brown, A. Etheridge, J. Boland, H. Benning, D. Betts. Replying, Father Moran said he had been in Armidale Diocese for over seven years, having been stationed at Tamworth, Inverell, Gunnedah and West Tamworth. He had felt sorry for himself when he arrived at Tamworth in the summer of 1938-39, the year of the record heat wave, but he had enjoyed his subsequent stay. --- T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: One of five priests on loan to the diocese from an Irish diocese before World War II. The five men were John Grace, Michael McGrath, John Moran, Malachy Stephen and James Walsh. Details of date and place of birth of each man unknown. Details of education of each man unknown. Details of place of study, and date and place of ordination of each man unknown. They arrived in the Diocese to commence a five year appointment in 1939, shortly before the start of World War II. Because of the duration of the war they remained on duty in the diocese until 1946 when all returned home. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
