Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born at Ballyneety, Co Limerick, date of birth unknown [1848). Details of education unknown. He studied at St Patrick's College, Thurles. He was ordained on 31 December 1873 for the Archdiocese of Cashel. Place of ordination unknown. He was released to go to the Maitland diocese for five years shortly after ordination. Immediately on arrival in Maitland he was sent to the Bathurst diocese for a short time, then back to Maitland. He then spent three years at Scone, two years at Quirindi, base for the Liverpool Plains mission. He then transferred from the Maitland diocese (and was given a farewell testimonial by fellow priests), to Sydney, and was appointed to Sacred Heart church Darlinghurst for 18 months. His next appointment was to Shoalhaven (Nowra), where he was stationed at the time of his death. While in Kiama to attend on Archbishop Vaughan, who was on a pastoral visit to the area, he and Patrick Clarke, a 26 year old priest attached to Nowra with McGrath, went swimming at Kendall's beach, Kiama. Both got into difficulties and drowned on 12 January 1883. They were buried at Gerringong. He was aged 35. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
