Biographical Notes

Death of Rev. Father J. O'Donnell, Singleton Argus, 9 September 1938, p 6, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article81919405:

News was received in Singleton last evening of the death of Rev. Father James O'Donnell in Lewisham Hospital. The deceased, who was 71 years of age, was a native of county Kilkenny, Ireland. He joined the priesthood in the land of his birth, becoming a member of the Vincentian Order, and gave missions throughout Ireland and England. In 1914 he came to Australia and joined the secular clergy in the diocese of Maitland. After brief appointments at East Maitland and Branxton, he came to Singleton as curate to the late Monsignor P. Meagher, and afterwards served in the same capacity with the late Monsignor J. Kavanagh. After 18 years' service here he made a trip to Ireland, and upon his return he retired from active duty as a priest and lived privately. The late Father O'Donnell was a zealous priest and a forceful and eloquent preacher. Two or three weeks ago he went to Lewisham Hospital for treatment, and death ensued upon an operation. The funeral took place to-day after Requiem Mass had been celebrated at Ashfield.
