Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979, p 28:
Bond, William Peter, English
Minister to the Condemned on Norfolk Island
Ed. at English College, Lisbon. Served as missioner in Wales and as chaplain to the Weld family. Leaving England with Bp. Willson in Jan 1844 he arrived in Hobart in May. He served in the 'hell-hole' of Port Arthur, and in '46 was sent to Norfolk to restore calm after the July uprising of prisoners. Later served at Oatlands and New Norfolk. A strong anti-transportation advocate and crossed swords with Governor Denison and his Lady who described Bond "as a clever and shrewd Jesuit". Taught at St. Mary's Seminary, Hobart, but here he fell out with the autocratic V.G., Wm. Hall. He resigned from St.M.in 1860 and returned to England to care for his aged father. During his prison chaplaincy at some stage he had the distinction of attending to the condemned bushranger, Martin Cash. His career is worthy of a detailed study and biography. The MDHC File at Torquay would be helpful. More helpful would be the amount of data in the keeping of the Hobart Historian,Fr. W.T. Southerwood. Bond died in London on 25.5.1888.
