Rev Dominic Vincent Burke, died 3 Mar 1968

Dominic Vincent Burke was born in Toowoomba on 24th April, 1913, to James and Mary Ellen Burke (nee Brady) of Gowrie Junction. One of nine children, his brother Frank was also ordained for the Toowoomba Diocese. He attended St Mary's Christian Brothers, Toowoomba and St John's College, Woodlawn at Lismore in NSW. He studied for the priesthood at the Irish College, Rome, and was ordained in the Basilica there on 8th April, 1939, by Archbishop Traglia. His appointments were as follows: Holy Name Church (1939-1940); Roma (1940-41); Goondiwindi (1941); St Patrick's Cathedral (1942-49); Holy Name (1949-50); Stanthorpe (1950); Warwick (1950-56); ADM in Mitchell (1956-62) and P.P. at St George (1962-68). He died suddenly in the Convent Chapel at St George, having just blessed the community with his monstrance at Benediction. He was a vigorous worker, very apostolic and very intelligent. He had suffered years of poor health. Fr Burke is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery.
