Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Shanahan, Richard Daniel AM

Born in the region of Hamilton Vic on 13 November 1914. Details of education unknown. He joined the Columban Fathers, studied for the priesthood in Melbourne and Ireland, and was ordained on 21 December 1942 in Ireland. After his return to Australia he was loaned temporarily to the Armidale diocese and never left. His first appointment in the diocese was as assistant priest Armidale, from where he transferred to Moree in 1954. He was at one time Administrator of the cathedral parish, and also later parish priest of Walgett and Gunnedah. At one time he held a private pilot's licence. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1990 'for services to religion and the community'. He retired from Gunnedah parish, then lived at Nazareth House, Tamworth until his death on 20 November 1998. He was buried in Lincoln Grove memorial park cemetery, Tamworth.
