Carroll, Maurice Patrick, Irish
Kept on the Move in the Melbourne Diocese
To the above heading should have been added the words: "as a curate". For as a Pastor of Flemington from 1899-1917 Maurice was constantly on the scene, building churches etc. despite a paralytic stroke suffered in 1899. All Hallows records indicate that he was the child of Michael and May O'Connell of Kilfinnane, County Limerick, born in March 1846. Early education was obtained at St. Aloysius' College, Limerick. Ordination took place on 24 June 1873; and with Frs. Maurice McKenna, John Felix Marshall and other notables, arrived in Melbourne on the 'Canning' on 2 January 1874. Kilmore, Geelong and Sale were the early scenes of labour. In April '78 he was appointed to St. Francis' with the care of the district of Carlton. He again served at Geelong before being appointed as P.P. of Gisborne in 1881. Ill-nealth caused his retirement from that post in 1884. Directory tracings from that point show:—St. Patrick's Cathedral (1886),—with care of the Clifton Hill district; South Melbourne (1892); West Melbourne (1894); Kilmore (1898); Dandenong (1899)—where he sponsored a new church at Outtrim. In his 18 years at Flemington he rebuilt the School and Presbytery; and in 1902 built the Holy Rosary Church at Kensington. After many years of ill-health he died at a private hospital on 29 January 1918. The age was 71, and burial took place at the Mortuary Chapel of the Melbourne General Cemetery.
