He attended Pine Mountain State School, St Joseph's Nth Ipswich and Nudgee. His Seminary training was at Manly, and he was ordained at Ipswich on 30th November, 1928, by Archbishop Duhig. His appointments were numerous, beginning with Roma in 1929 followed by Charleville. He was transferred to Toowoomba as assistant to Monsignor McKenna at Holy Name and then to Clifton where Mons McKenna had been appointed.. In 1937 he was re-appointed to Toowoomba, first as assistant to the ADM of St Patrick's, Dr Madden, and later as senior priest of the Cathedral Staff. In 1939 the newly appointed Bishop Roper sent Father Mahon to Warwick to assist the aging Monsignor Potter. This indeed was a hard assignment which required tact, patience and ability, all of which Fr Mahon handled admirably. The years of strenuous work began to have an effect on his health and in 1940 he found it necessary to take several months off. He returned to active duty with appointments at Allora from 1940-1948 and back to Warwick as ADM (Warwick having been made a Mensal Parish by Bishop Roper) from 1948 until 1967. In January, 1961, Father Mahon was selected by Bishop Brennan as a Diocesan Consultor. Under his administration, St Mary's Warwick saw tremendous development both spiritually and physically, including the erection of churches at Gladfield, Glennie Heights and Karara. Father Mahon died following a brief illness (although he had suffered poor health throughout his life) in the Mater Hospital, Brisbane. He is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery. He was a quiet unassuming man of charming character - seemingly unflappable. He was instrumental in many of the school buildings in Warwick, was a keen and good fisherman and a fine host to many visitors. He is constantly remembered in the highest regard and was loved by all that knew him. A man of cheerful disposition, a gentleman in every way and able to shoulder the burden of responsibilities required in his position. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
