Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 55:

Cochard, Louis, MSC, French
Novice Master in the Sacred Heart Fathers

Cochard was born at St. Emile on 14 November 1870. Profession took place in France on 4 October 1890. Service in the humble mission of Bereina under Bishop Navarre (living at Thursday Island) fell to Cochard's lot. After 11 years of hard and faithful pioneering service he was transferred to the small mission of Longford in Tasmania. This was followed by a five year term as Novice Master at Douglas Park from 1917 to 1922. Directories show that a second missionary term was spent in Tasmania: at Burnie (1925), St. Joseph's Cathedral and Wynyard. Ill-health had compelled him to leave New Guinea, and after years of hard and consistent service in Tasmania and Sydney there came a further deterioration. He died on 20 July 1933 at the age of 62. Seemingly he was interred first at Waverley, and on 28 June 1947 was re-interred at St. Mary's Towers, Douglas Park.

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Cochard, Louis (MSC)

Born at St Emilien, Loire, France, 12 November 1870. He was educated at the Minor Seminary Issoudun. After military service he joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and was professed as a member of the Order on 4 October 1890. After completion of studies he went to Papua as a Scholastic (1893), where he was ordained on 30 June 1895 by Archbishop Navarre. He spent 11 years in the mission field, at Mou and Bereina in Papua, until forced by ill health to return to Australia in 1904. He then spent 15 years in the MSC community in Tasmania, returned to Sydney and was appointed to the staff of Douglas Park novitiate and Apostolic School, where he spent eight years as Novice Master. He then was appointed chaplain of the Benedictine convent, Rydalmere. He spent a short time in the Armidale diocese, based at Glen Innes, about 1930. He suffered from ill health in his later years. He died 20 July 1933 and was buried at Randwick cemetery in the MSC plot, but his remains were transferred to Douglas Park and re-interred in the MSC cemetery on 28 June 1947.
