Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 127:

D'Arcy, Michael, Archdeacon, Irish
Braidwood Pastor for 24 Years

The writer knows nothing of the character of the man but along with his readers can presume that a priest who gives 42 years of unbroken service and 24 years in one parish can be counted among the worthy. Michael was born in Killaloe, County Clare on 29 September 1841. His parents later lived in Cashel. Educated at a private school in Kincora and at All Hallows, Dublin, he was ordained a deacon on 28 March 1864, and the following year on the 29th June was ordained in the College Chapel for the Sydney Archdiocese at the hands of Bishop Whelan. Shipping records show that he arrived on the 'Champion of the Seas' on the 2nd of November in Melbourne. First appointment was to Darlinghurst, 1865-7; thence to Kiama, 1867-72, and on to Shoalhaven (Nowra), 1873-7, with a brief sojourn at St. Mary's Cathedral in 1876. We lose sight of him in the period 1877-1881, but on the 25th of March of the latter year he was appointed Pastor of Braidwood. Perhaps a Braidwood church history, if there is one, could detail his character and achievements. He died there on 7 October 1905 at the age of 64. His tomb can be seen in St. Bede's churchyard.
