Biographical Notes

Fr. Don Victory Ordained In Rome, The Southern Cross, Adelaide, 15 January 1954, p 10, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article167688763:

On Sunday, December 20, Rev. Don Victory, second son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Victory, of Peterborough, was ordained to the priesthood by His Eminence Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi, Cardinal Prefect of the Propagation of the Faith. The ceremony took place in the chapel of Propaganda College. With him were ordained 29 other students from 12 different nationalities, the largest groups being the Chinese, numbering nine, and the Vietnamese, numbering eight. Some of these Chinese have lived under the Communist regime before escaping disguised as coolies; likewise the Vietnamese have experienced the terrorism of the Communist forces. The first two native priests from Spanish West Africa were also numbered in this class.

Immediately after the Ordination ceremony the Holy Father received the newly ordained priests with their relatives and friends in a public audience.

The following day, Fr. Victory said his first Mass in the chapel of the Cittadella dei Ragazzi (Small-sized Boys' Town), a centre of observation for problem boys. His server was one of the boys from the institution, who admitted he did not remember how to answer all the responses. Assistant priest for the Mass was Fr. Dominic Boardman, a South African priest who is gaining experience studying the methods of Italian Boys' Towns. A short sermon on the dignity of the priesthood was preached by the Rt. Rev. Mgr. John Patrick Caroll-Abbing, an Irish priest who founded the Boys' Town at Civita Vecchia, and is now head of all Boys' Town Incorporated. Fr. Victory has been teaching catechism to the boys of the Cittadella over the past few years, so it was fitting that his first Mass should be celebrated among them. During the Mass the Australian students from Propaganda College sang suitable hymns.

Fr. Victory received his primary education from the Sisters of St. Joseph at Peterborough. His secondary studies were done at the Minor Seminary at Magill. He then went to Rome to Propaganda College, where he gained his licentiate degree in Philosophy, and two years later Baccalaureate of Theology. At present he is preparing for the final exams of Theology. After the completion of his studies he will return to take up work in the diocese of Port Pirie.
