Last of Four Priest Brothers Dies in Sydney
Catholic Weekly, Sydney, 7 October 1943, p 5, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article146487838:

The Rev. Father Joseph Ahearne, after a lingering illness, passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospice on Thursday last.

On Saturday, at 10 a.m., there was a Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul in the Sacred Heart Church, Darlinghurst. The Right Rev. Monsignor R. Collender, P.P., V.G. (a college contemporary of the deceased), was celebrant; the Rev. Father R. Funcheon (St. Mary's Cathedral) was deacon, and the Rev. Father P. Croke (Elizabeth Bay), sub-deacon. The Rev. Father J. Fitzpatrick (Darlinghurst), acted as master of ceremonies.

The following clergy were in the choir: The Right Rev. Monsignor T. Hayden, P.P., D.D. (Darlinghurst), the Very Rev. Monsignori J. McDonald, P.P. (Manly), and W.J. Hurley, P.P. (Bondi Beach), Rev. Dr. P. Tuomey, P.P. (Dulwich Hill), the Rev. Fathers R. Lonergan. P.P. (Campsie), P. Power, P.P. (Surry Hills), J. McCarthy, P.P. (Belmore), P. Cunningham, T. Scanlon and H. Kennedy (Darlinghurst), F. Gallagher (Rose Bay), P. Flanagan and M. Crehan (Woollahra), S. Burchell (Wahroonga).

The cantors were the Rev. Father D. O'Keeffe (Haymarket) and the Rev. Father P. Carr (Maroubra).

The interment took place at the Rookwood Cemetery. The last prayers were recited by Monsignor Collender, assisted by Father Cunningham.

Father Ahearne was ordained for Sydney at All Hallows College, Dublin, in 1892. After his arrival he laboured for some time in the parishes of Braidwood and Camden. Seeking a climate more suitable to his health, he went north, and was engaged in missionary work for some years in the Brisbane Archdiocese. Later, when on a holiday he visited the U.S.A., and was induced to tarry there for some time. On his return to Sydney his health was much impaired, and for a considerable time he found himself unequal to the discharge of any serious priestly work. Father Ahearne was a member of a gifted religious family, well known in Callan, County Kilkenny, half a century ago. His three brothers (who predeceased him) had been, like himself, called to the priesthood.—R.I.P.
