Memories: Growing Up With Irish Priests
by Father Paul Bourke

Paul Bourke reflects on some Irish Priests from his childhood to his early days as a Priest.

Monsignor Nesdale
Like all the Irish Priests he was the boss and simply authoritative in a way that couldn't disagree. He is my first memory as a Priest and would roll his R's like no one I'd heard before, during his Sermons. Occasionally he would take the place of his Curates at the weekly Wednesday School RI at Wanilla and we certainly listened! He was old, stern but human, kind and knew us all. One week at RI he gave my young brother Jack, who would have been about 6, a Prayer Book for being able to recite the Creed. I was jealous for not being asked but I guess Mum was proud. I would have been more than ten years ordained when he died so he was always old in my life.
